October and November

After half term we learnt about Guy Fawkes and why we celebrate Bonfire Night, we created Bonfire and firework poems and pictures.

Then we started our science topic where we learnt about Sound and Hearing, we looked at how we hear, how far we can hear aswell as how instruments make their noises. This linked in to our topic for this term which is 'Around the World with Animals'. We have begun the topic by looking at where we might find different animals (farm, British Wildlife, Pet or another country) we then looked at the different animal groups (e.g. Fish, Birds, Amphibians, Reptiles, Mammals or Insects) and we created a fact sheet to inform people about the different groups.

Finally on Friday we celebrated Children in Need so we wore spots. Mr. Holdstock had his hair cut. Here are some photos from that day.

Since starting in Year 1.

Since we started in Year 1 we have been really busy. We have been learning all about Ourselves and our different senses.

Last Friday we had European Day of Languages where we dressed up as people from different countries or the colours of different countries. We leant bits about France, Poland and Ireland!
Here is what we all looked like:
Spanish Dancers
 French
 Roman Godesses
 Spain, Portugal and Denmark
 United Kingdom

We have just started our first topic "I'm A Celebrity" where we will be looking at different famous people. We have started with Arcimboldo who is a famous Italian painter. He painted faces using different fruit and vegetables. We have had a go at designing our own Arcimboldo pictures then we made them from foam faces and finally we have used real fruit and vegetables. You can find these outside our classroom!

Our Day at the Farm!

On Thursday 15th September we went to Sandfield Farm. We thought about our senses then used them for different activities. We smelt cow food and silage! We went on a nature walk and collected different things from nature (touch) so we could make a picture later. We visited the pond and listened to what we could hear, we looked around to see what things would of been like years ago and finally we tasted some apples and pears freshly picked from the orchard. Then after lunch we made animal collages with the things we had collected earlier then we went and played in the forest. Some played the blindfold game, went in a hammock and we had great fun a the new den!

Welcome 2011

Welcome to a brand new start to a new year. We are the new Year 1s.
Can I remind you that it is very important for us to read EVERY NIGHT so that we can recognise more words and then this will help with our spellings.
We are practising how we should hold our pencils correctly when we are writing and drawing.
This is how we should do it:

Since learning about the Great Fire of London we have written a newspaper report about what happened. Then we looked at buildings in London for our art project. Finally we looked at the Crown Jewels and designed our own Crowns. Below is a picture of the Kings and Queens of Year 1.

LONDON

Since starting our topic on London we have learnt about 'The Plague', how it started, how it spread and what the doctors tried to do. We have also learnt about 'The Great Fire of London' which started 2nd September 1666 in a Bakery in Pudding Lane. We have drawn our own Great Fire using pastels and today we have made our own houses, out of boxes, and recreated what the Great Fire of London would of been like by setting them on FIRE!!!! We made them out of cardboard to show how quickly the fire spread because the houses in 1666 had wooden beams which caught fire ever so quickly.
Here are some photos of the day.

Our London Street
Where it all started in the Bakery
 It went up very quickly

This was all that was left of our houses.

We have had fun, fiery day. We really, really, really enjoyed it!!
